I recently heard a minster I respect very much touch on the institution of "the Lord's Supper", and he said that the Passover ended BEFORE communion was given. I'm not sure exactly what he meant by that. Perhaps he was referring to the meal proper, or perhaps he was referring to the fact that with the institution of the elements as commemorative of Christ that Passover, as a uniquely Jewish observance, had been fulfilled. Then too, maybe he meant that communion was a totally separate or distinct occurrence from our Lord's last seder, or supper, and therefore not connected to the Passover observance. Assuming it was the later, I would disagree. For more on that please see the three part series of articles we recently shared on "Christ Our Passover." At any rate, as the video above shows, the bread and the "after supper" cup are very much still a part of the seder observance. In this case, they simply follow the main course, but are not separate from the feast itself. However, it is true that Passover ended in the sense that it was fulfilled and Christianized. With the instituion of that bread and cup as now representative of Christ's body and blood, which we now bless, Passover became a memorial of it;s true and ultimate meaning -- Jesus.. That is to say the Jewish feast is fulfilled in the person and work of Christ, making of it now a Christian witness and observance, not merely a Mosaic one. When we eat the Lord's Supper we are (or should be) observing Passover. In Communion, or at Passover (which are to be one and the same biblically), we memorilaize Christ's sacrifice and our freedom from sin thereby, of which the Egyptian exodus and Passover where a foreshadow. For more about that, God's plan of salvation as revealed in the Passover, enjoy the sermon clip above. NicoleandJason Woodard David McNabb Mark Ledbetter Luke Brown Jerrel Brown Kevin Walker Gary Langley Bill Heth Dave Dorsey Tom Sterbens Major B.
Here's a link to video footage of the closing portion and sermon of the Seder, the communion proper portion of the observance. It starts right after the ransom of the afikomen, or the hidden bread, and goes from there into the parting of the bread and the drinking of the cup, while accompanied with a gospel message of Jesus, Our Passover. Enjoy!
